Allergic Dermatitis<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You probably know by now that allergies are pretty common among dogs, whatever their sizes or breeds are.<\/p>\n<p>Allergies occur when your dog's immune system overreacts to certain triggers that are normally harmless.<\/p>\n<p>When your dog's skin becomes inflamed and irritated due to an allergic reaction, that's where allergic dermatitis happens.<\/p>\n<p>Because it's so itchy and poor Fido can't even complain, they can only scratch or bite at the affected area, causing scabs to form.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllergies, if left untreated or unmanaged, can cause continued discomfort in your pet,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/pet-talk\/allergies-in-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said Dr. Alison Diesel<\/a>, a clinical professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSelf-trauma to the skin can create wounds that can become secondarily infected,\u201d Diesel added.<\/p>\n<p>The scabs that you would see from scratching and biting may be dry and crusty and may be accompanied by redness, swelling, and hair loss.<\/p>\n<p>Allergic dermatitis can be caused by a variety of allergens, including environmental allergens such as pollen, mold, or dust mites, as well as food allergies.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, Belle doesn't have allergies. When an external parasite bites, burrows, or feeds on its skin, it might scratch or bite at the affected area to relieve the itchiness.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, scratching and biting may lead to hair loss, secondary infections, and, later on, scabs.<\/p>\n<p>As a pet owner, and I'm sure you'd agree on this, among the things I hate the most are fleas, ticks, and mites taking advantage of my poor, sweet Belle.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, they're also the most common external parasites in canines.<\/p>\n<p>Let's discuss them briefly below:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Fleas<\/strong> are small, wingless insects that feed on the dog's blood. The scabs may be dry and crusty, accompanied by redness, swelling, and hair loss.<\/p>\n<p>If your vet has told you from the get-go that your Fido has this disorder, you might have been expecting scabbing here and there already.<\/p>\n<p>But if this is the first time you hear it, then it's best to reach out to your vet and seek treatment.<\/p>\n<p>And&#8230; not that I'm scaring you, but these skin conditions are among the most serious and can result in death.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"Nutritional-issue\"><strong>7. Yeast Infection<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is a fairly common type of skin infection in dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Some yeast on a dog\u2019s skin is normal and even necessary.<\/p>\n<p>The problem occurs when the dog develops an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smalldoorvet.com\/learning-center\/medical\/yeast-infections-in-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">excessive amount of yeast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It begins to build up in warm, moist places on the dog's body.<\/p>\n<p>This environment creates irritated, itchy, and discolored skin.<\/p>\n<p>Then, your dog will lick, chew, and scratch their skin incessantly to try to relieve their discomfort, which causes the scabs. <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A further complication can arise when the scratching and chewing cause open wounds on the dog\u2019s skin.<\/p>\n<p>That bacteria then enters and creates a whole host of new and serious side effects you must treat.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/topdogtips.com\/dog-skin-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61499\">9 Common Skin Problems in Dogs (How to Prevent and Treat Them)<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"RtZE8WoE3eE\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"3 Dog Yeast Infection Home Remedies and Treatments (2022)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RtZE8WoE3eE?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"treatment-for-crusty-scabs-on-dogs\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Treatment Options for <\/strong><strong>Crusty Scabs on Dogs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Now that you have made it this far, I want to go through some treatment options I promised you.<\/p>\n<p>Most of these will resolve your dog's minor skin and scab problems unless there is something more serious going on.<\/p>\n<p>These are some of the options our vet advised for my Belle, as well as some stuff other pet owners swear by.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Use Anti-bacterial or Anti-fungal Dog Shampoos and Ointments<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Oh, you'd be happy how many shampoos and ointments are available that cater to dogs with bacterial or fungal infections.<\/p>\n<p>And a lot of them are over-the-counter (OTC), too!<\/p>\n<p>If it's your first time trying anti-bacterial\/anti-fungal shampoos and ointments for your pups, the best place to ask for recommendations would be at your vet's office, of course.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of reading materials online, too, so you can do complete research about which shampoo or ointment is most effective for the specific condition your dog has.<\/p>\n<p>Just make sure to follow the instructions!<\/p>\n<p>You can find OTC <a href=\"https:\/\/topdogtips.com\/best-medicated-dog-shampoo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61501\">medicated shampoos<\/a> to treat a wide variety of skin disorders in dogs that are caused by fleas, mites, lice, general allergies, and more.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Keep Your Dog, Home, and Yard Clean<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Keeping your dog, home, and yard clean and pest-free is vital.<\/p>\n<p>Managing these three can completely prevent your dog from developing painful and potentially dangerous skin disorders.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially true for external parasites and bacterial infections.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some <strong>QUICK TIPS <\/strong>on how to do that:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>a) Pick up and properly dispose of feces in your yard,<\/strong>\u00a0and anywhere your dog plays multiple times each day, once at the bare minimum;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>b) Bathe your dog as often as needed, but at least once every couple of weeks<\/strong> or once a month, at minimum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">But if they have been to somewhere dirty or known to be frequented by parasites or sick animals, bathe them immediately.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>c) Wash all of your dog\u2019s bedding at least once a week<\/strong> and more often as needed;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>d) Wash your bedding and clean all furniture, carpets, rugs, and flooring in your home at least once a week<\/strong> and more often as needed.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Brush Your Dog's Fur Daily<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While bathing a dog is not recommended daily, brushing your dog's fur <em>can and should<\/em> be done every single day.<\/p>\n<p>This helps keep their skin and coat healthy and disease and disorder-free. Plus, it's also a great bonding time for you both!<\/p>\n<p>The simple act of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fourpaws.com\/pets-101\/grooming-gateway\/brushing-your-dog#:~:text=Brush%20in%20the%20direction%20of,reduce%20shedding%20and%20prevent%20mats.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brushing a dog<\/a> does much more than you think.<\/p>\n<p>Brushing removes dirt, dandruff, bacteria, and any foreign objects or parasites that could irritate a dog\u2019s skin from their body.<\/p>\n<p>It also detangles its coat, loosens and eliminates dead hair, and prevents the pores from becoming clogged and infected.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly and most importantly, brushing your dog's fur can also help stimulate their oil glands and equally distribute all of those natural protective oils, which are essential to their overall skin health.<\/p>\n<p>A good brushing doesn\u2019t have to take a lot of time. Even five minutes a day will do.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Use Fish Oil<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Essential fatty acids are essential to the health of a dog\u2019s skin and coat, and not all dogs get enough of this vital nutrient in their diet, which can lead to skin disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Give your dog <a href=\"https:\/\/topdogtips.com\/best-fish-oil-for-dogs-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61502\">fish oil capsules<\/a> once daily with a meal, or add fish oil liquid to your dog's food to remedy this issue.<\/p>\n<p>You should also consult your vet about how to add this wonder oil to your dog's diet properly.<\/p>\n<p>You can read more about this topic in the following <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jn\/article\/128\/12\/2783S\/4724467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61503\">peer-reviewed article<\/a> published in the <em>Journal of Nutrition.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The study showed clear benefits of high doses of essential fatty acids in a dog\u2019s diet to the dog\u2019s overall skin and coat health.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Flea and Tick Collars, Topical Treatments<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A lot of pet product companies make a wide variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/topdogtips.com\/best-flea-collars-for-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61504\">flea and tick collars<\/a>, as well as topical and oral treatments that work to keep fleas and ticks off of your dog.<\/p>\n<p>For us, I always make Belle wear collars, especially in summer when fleas and ticks seem to be everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>That's apart from her monthly fleas and tick meds, of course.<\/p>\n<p>But with anything you use on your dog, it is important to thoroughly research the product, its ingredients, effectiveness, potential side effects, and customer reviews first before purchasing and using it on your dog.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>6. Use Only Safe, High-quality grooming Products<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sure, a two-dollar dog shampoo might seem like a great deal. But there certainly are reasons why a product is much less expensive than its counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>It is often made with cheaper, chemical-ridden, irritating, and even harmful ingredients and chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>To save yourself the stress and hassle of dealing with a skin condition, research before purchasing any grooming product for your dog.<\/p>\n<p>Here's an <a href=\"https:\/\/topdogtips.com\/vet-shampoo-for-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> written by one of our resident vet experts Dr. Deborah Shores, DVM, about her recommended grooming products for dogs.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. Try Some OTC Medication<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/topdogtips.com\/safe-human-meds-for-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benadryl<\/a>, the same allergy medication humans take to help control their allergies, can also be given to a dog for the same purpose.<\/p>\n<p>It also works wonders for pups who are having sleep issues due to their itchiness.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petmd.com\/dog\/care\/can-i-give-my-dog-benadryl-and-if-so-how-much#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20Merck%20Veterinary,to%20three%20times%20a%20day.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general dosage<\/a> for giving dogs Benadryl is about 1mg per pound of their body weight.<\/p>\n<p>Never give a dog more than two doses of 50 mg of Benadryl in a 24-hour period on your own. Consult your dog's vet for the proper frequency.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>9. &#8230;Or Veterinarian Prescribed Medication For The Crusty Scabs on Dog's Back<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If all those OTCs, grooming products, and recipes didn't work, I'm sure this last one will.<\/p>\n<p>Your vet can prescribe various prescription-strength oral medications, medicated shampoos, and ointments.<\/p>\n<p>You normally can't buy these things over-the-counter without your doctor's signed prescription.<\/p>\n<p>Your vet may also do a couple of diagnostic tests on your doing to determine the exact cause of your dog's scabbing.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the tests might include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>allergy testing<\/li>\n<li>bacterial culture<\/li>\n<li>cytology<\/li>\n<li>fungal culture<\/li>\n<li>physical exam<\/li>\n<li>skin style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0are small parts of the skin that are inflamed, irritated, and red.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Impetigo <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a bacterial infection, and it mostly affects puppies. Pups with this condition may develop pus-filled blisters.
